New Detroit Assurance enhancements bring added driver support to intersections and both left- and right-hand turns.
At Freightliner, our experience shapes how we engineer our trucks. We’ve logged the long hours, driven the morning miles, and been there for late-night stretches.
We know fleets need to keep operations running safely, profitably, and efficiently, and the Fifth Generation Freightliner Cascadia® delivers just that. With Detroit® powertrain integration and thoughtful design, this is the truck that’s fit for the long haul. The Fifth Generation Cascadia also sets itself apart in safety: Active Side Guard Assist 2 is an industry first and the only system of its kind on the market, providing active braking support for both left- and right-hand turns.
Hauling freight comes with its share of challenges, from busy lanes and distracted car drivers to unpredictable weather. Even the most experienced drivers have had close calls where quick decisions can make all the difference. The Fifth Generation Cascadia is built to be there in those moments with advanced safety and accident mitigation systems designed to work in more scenarios.
Built on Detroit Assurance with ABA6
Detroit Assurance® with Active Brake Assist 6 (ABA6) uses fused camera and radar technology to monitor up to 270 degrees around the truck. Four short-range radars, one long-range radar and a windshield-mounted camera help the system recognize vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in blind spots, adjacent lanes, visible curves and other areas around the truck.

When a possible collision is detected, ABA6 first provides real-time audio and visual alerts. If the driver does not respond, the system can apply partial braking, followed by full braking when needed. It is support designed to step in during a critical moment while keeping the driver in control.
For the 2027 model year, that foundation is expanding with Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2. These features bring added support to intersections and turning maneuvers, where traffic can approach from several directions and visibility can change quickly.
More Awareness at Intersections
Intersections introduce some of the most unpredictable moments on the road. Cross Traffic Assist comes standard on the Fifth Generation Cascadia and is designed specifically for these scenarios, helping reduce the risk of cross-path collisions.

Cross Traffic Assist brings added confidence to busy intersections by identifying and tracking vehicles that cross the truck’s path from either side. When a potential collision risk is detected, the system can provide an audible and visual warning. Depending on the likelihood of impact, partial or full braking is also initiated when needed.
When braking is needed, Cross Traffic Assist is designed to respond in a controlled way based on the likelihood of impact, helping support the driver through a complex intersection event without disrupting the flow of the drive.

Support Through Right- and Left-Hand Turns
Turning movements, especially in traffic, require awareness in multiple directions at once. Active Side Guard Assist 2 expands protection during these moments, providing active braking on both left- and right-hand turns.
Right turns: The system monitors the passenger-side blind spot alongside the truck to help detect vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists that may not be visible to the driver. If a turn is attempted and a potential collision is identified, the system can issue warnings and apply braking to help avoid the hazard.
Left turns: When the turn signal is engaged, the system actively monitors oncoming traffic. If a turn is attempted and a potential collision is identified, it can issue warnings and apply braking when necessary to help bring the truck to a stop.
Active Side Guard Assist 2 comes standard, including both the original Side Guard Assist functionality and support through left-hand turns to assist drivers throughout a broader range of maneuvers. By bringing both directions into a single system, these capabilities work together to help provide consistent protection across both turning scenarios.
Ready for the Road Ahead
Safety technology works best when it supports the driver without getting in the way. Cross Traffic Assist and Active Side Guard Assist 2 build on the capabilities fleets already know from Detroit Assurance with ABA6, adding support for more of the real-world situations drivers encounter every day.
