President Donald Trump signed a new law to reopen the government after a shutdown. The law will fund the government until September 30. It also includes other important changes.
The new law allocates $200 million to help build additional truck parking. It also makes the President’s rule on English-language skills for truck drivers an official law. These rules are now part of the final law.
The Department of Transportation must now update its rules. Truck drivers who cannot speak or read English well enough will not be allowed to drive until they can. Drivers must be able to communicate with people, understand road signs, answer questions from officials, and complete reports in English.
Any new truck parking built with this money must be close to main highways or major roads.
Truck drivers will not have to pay to use these new parking spots.
The $200 million cannot be used to build charging or fueling stations for trucks. It is only for parking.
The law also says that trucks carrying animals or insects do not have to use special electronic log devices.
